What is Self-Motivation?

An important skill to overcome any kind of difficulties you are facing in your life. It is also the driving force to keep you energized to perform any skill. In other words, it is an ability to yield happiness and passion to your life that leads to enhanced mood and confidence.

Why do you need Self-Motivation?

Let’s begin with this question. How are you feeling today?

Six basic emotions eyes representation
Six basic emotions

Emotions are an integral part of human life. Some researchers believe that even animals have emotions. An American psychologist, Paul Ekman, in 1972, recognized six basic emotions seen worldwide: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness and surprise. Later he created an “atlas of emotions” with more than ten thousand facial expressions. In 1980, an American psychologist, Robert Plutchik diagrammed a wheel of eight emotions: joy, trust, fear, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger and anticipation. Tiffany Watt Smith, a cultural historian and author of ‘The Book of Human Emotions’ listed 154 different emotions and feelings worldwide.

In an animated movie ‘Inside Out’ – Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger, were five personified emotions. These emotions try to lead a young girl through her life.

Likewise, these emotions steer your day to day activities.

We Are In a Lockdown

Outbreak of COVID-19 is everywhere on Earth. Lockdown is imposed in many countries to control the spread. Living a quarantine life has changed your schedule. Because of the unexpected constrained environment now you are living in, you got no time to plan for it. Your relations are getting strained and your mental health is getting affected. You see rapid change in negative emotions and eventually you are in bad mood.

Don’t confuse emotions with mood, it’s either good or bad, positive or negative. Moods may last for long hours whereas emotions are just for seconds and minutes.

Out of the aforesaid basic emotions, if you are feeling sadness, fear, disgust and anger then your energy is misused. Consequently it leads to bad mood and further you may feel secondary negative emotions. This creates a vicious circle leading an individual into depression. At this moment you are in need of self-motivation to stay out of depression, live happily and experience serendipity.

How should you gain Self-Motivation?

While the circumstances are not controllable, you can very well control yourself. You generally know the ways to get self-motivated. But, your mind ceases to think of when you actually want to apply it in your life. Following are the 4 easy techniques to live your life to the fullest. Follow the NEW L to become a NEW U.

1. Nature

Feel the nature in motion. Try to listen to the nature’s music, birds chirping, trees leaves rustling. If you are fortunate enough to have a water body around you, try to listen to the sound of water flowing. Get absorbed in it. Constant pleasant sounds relax you. Best times for this activity are the early mornings and evenings. De-clutter your inner world and make new connections within. Meditate and go within, everyday, to find your inner strength.

“No matter what kind of challenges or difficulties or painful situations you go through in your life, we all have something deep within us that we can reach down and find the inner strength to get through them.”―Alana Stewart

If you are living in a place where nature’s sound is cutoff, listen to Relaxing and healing waterfall and birds sound

2. Entertainment

This is the best way to forget all your troubles and pains. It takes you to a completely different world while your body stays where you are. It gives your soul the wings to fly and dream.

Divide your day accordingly and make a to-do-list. Jot down names of the movies you want to watch, make a song list, find out books to read and podcasts to listen. Playing game is also the best thing to do. There are many ways to entertain yourself. You can pick the one that suits you the most.
